World Drowning Prevention Day is an internationally recognised day. The aim is to raise the importance of education to keep people safe in, on and around the water.
He Taonga Te Wai – A commemorative dawn event commenced in the early hours this morning as Aotearoa became the first country to open World Drowning Prevention Day for the world.
A 7am dawn service was then followed by breakfast at Westhaven Marina in Auckland. The inaugural event brings together everyone who would like to remember those lost to the water.
Lighting the way, make sure you look out for the Sky tower turning blue that evening. Drowning Prevention Auckland is honoured and thankful that the sky tower will commemorate this day for the first time in history.
The lighting of the tower is a symbol of remembrance for those lives lost and a beacon of light for the future of Aotearoa as we work hard to stop drowning in our waters.
Schools and communities are also encouraged to join the campaign in Going Blue!
Join your fellow Aucklanders who will be hosting events, going blue, fundraising, learning about water safety and much more!
