Marist Samoa Boxing club strikes gold in tour of New Zealand
Marist Samoa Boxing club has returned to Samoa with six gold medals after competing in a weekend boxing tournament in Hastings as part of their New Zealand tour.
The tournament was a collaboration between Marist Samoa Boxing and the Giants Boxing Club of Hastings, who have formed a partnership that dates back seven years.
The relationship was originally formed as a way for the clubs to connect and share their experiences and knowledge to help grow the sport of boxing.
The team consisted of six fighters all under the age of 18, with all six fighters taking home gold medals in their respective bouts. It was a result that club chairman Tavu’i Mike Lemisio was pleased with. .
“Our team (is) made of juniors and youth, and three of them have been selected to represent Samoa next month in Tahiti for Oceania Youth and Junior Competition,” Tavu’i says.
“This boxing competition hosting by Giants Boxing Hasting Club, is an ideal to prepare these young Samoan boxers next month.”
The trip to New Zealand was mainly funded by family members of the fighters with help from a few sponsors.
Tavu’i added that, for a couple of the fighters, it was their first time flying out of the country and that adapting to the cold climate was a challenge. But such obstacles were not enough to hold back the team as they clinched their gold medal streak.
Moving forward, Tavu’i says that the club will head back to Samoa to continue on with their normal schedule of local boxing tournaments. A trip to America is also on the cards with the hope of expanding the fighters’ experience and knowledge.
“Special thanks to my uso Craig McDougall of Giants Boxing Hastings, we appreciated your love and support these many years. You are not of Samoan heritage but your heart described you as a loving person and real Samoan. Faafetai tele lava,” Tavui says.
“To Iona Tusa of IBOX Auckland NZ and Michael Petersen of Cambridge Hamilton Boxing faafetai tele lava usos for your concern and loving to our Marist Boxing Samoa.”
