Jacinda Ardern will conclude her term as Prime Minister on February 7.
She made the announcement at a Labour Caucus retreat in Napier today, holding back tears as she spoke to the Party and the press.
The Prime Minister said, “this summer I had hoped to find a way to prepare not just for another year, but another term because that is what this year requires. I have not been able to do that.”
“And so today I am announcing that I will not be seeking re-election and that my term as Prime Minister will conclude no later than the 7th of February.”
The Prime Minister also announced the date for this year’s General Election, which will be held on Saturday 14 October.
It was the consideration of the election dates during her summer break which gave her time to reflect on her journey.
“I believe leading a country is the most privileged job anyone could ever have, but also one of the more challenging,” she said.
“You cannot and should not do it unless you have a full tank. Plus a bit in reserve for those unexpected challenges.
“This has been the most fulfilling five and a half years of my life, but it’s also had its challenges.”
Last year Pasifika Ministers Aupito William Sio and Poto Williams also announced they will retire at the 2023 election.
