Barbara Edmonds and Tangi Utikere have become new Labour MPs after winning their electorates, and Teanau Tuiono will become the Green’s first ever Pasifika MP.
There were jubilant celebrations as Barbara Edmonds broke into a siva Samoa as confirmation came through that she won the Mana electorate.
“I’m pretty overwhelmed. Our campaign team worked really hard for this,” said Edmonds.
Her win continues the Labour dominance in the Mana district, following in the footsteps of Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban and Kris Faafoi. Both were on hand to congratulate the mother of eight.
“It is lovely to see a new generation of Pacific politicians coming through,” said Luamanuvao.
“Barbara is going to make a fantastic MP.”
Meanwhile two Cook Islands MPs have come out of Palmerston North.
Tangi Utikere joins Labour after winning the seat, while the Greens’ Teanau Tuiono has made it into Parliament with his party polling at 7.6%.
