Rarotonga gave thanks in song and prayer this morning as it marks the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity.
The day began with a re-enactment aboard the voyaging society Vaka Paikea arriving at Avarua wharf with dignitaries.
The group then walked to Avaiki Tautau in Takuvaine for a special service at the site of where it is believed Papehia gave his first sermon. Papehia is the Tahitian missionary who is largely credited with converting the population.
The delegation then proceeded along the Ara Metua to the Takamoa Theological College for the unveiling of the special memorial.
The celebrations mark the arrival of The London Missionary Society led by Rev. John Willimans who arrived at Rarotonga on July 25, 1823. Celebrations also took place last week on the nearby islands of Atiu, Mitiaro and Mauke.
