Josh Tatofi’s recent South Pacific Tour was nothing short of mesmerising, reaffirming why he remains one of the most compelling voices in contemporary Pacific music.

The Due Drop Events Centre in Manukau, Auckland, was the place to be last week as the ‘Ouana king’ himself captivated audiences using his signature blend of Hawaiian, soul, and island music to an eager crowd.

From the moment Tatofi took the stage, it was clear that this would be an evening of deep emotional resonance. His rich, baritone voice is both gentle and powerful, capable of conveying a range of emotions.

His rendition of ‘Fakateretere’, a Tahitian song with Tuamotu roots, was a standout moment, as Tongan actress Diamond Langi graced the stage with her elegant dance moves.

The performance was both vibrant and intimate, resonating deeply with the audience, many of whom sang along in a shared celebration of Pacific heritage.

Also accompanying Tatofi throughout the night was his talented ‘Jream team’ made up of Laupepa Letuli and Travis Kaka who complimented his voice beautifully. Their ability to adapt to different styles, from soulful ballads to upbeat tracks should be praised.

Samoan favourite “Le Tu’una Oe” was met with enthusiastic applause. Tatofi’s delivery of the song, with its beautiful lyrics and gentle rhythm, was both tender and powerful. The song’s romantic feel and Tatofi’s heartfelt performance made it a crowd favourite, showcasing why he is often referred to as the ‘Polynesian Luther Vandross’.

As the night drew to a close with a performance of ‘Ouana’ the audience erupted in cheerful che-hooing and standing ovations were a testament to the impact of Tatofi’s music.

Tongan flags filled the stadium and were flying as high as they could go, a perfect ending to a night that celebrated not just music, but also the shared cultural ties that bind South Pacific communities.

For anyone who appreciates soulful Pacific music, it was an unforgettable experience that reaffirmed Tatofi’s place as one of the genre’s most cherished artists.
