Victoria University of Wellington has appointed Dr Emma Dunlop-Bennett as its new Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika).
Of Samoan and Māori heritage, Dr Dunlop-Bennett brings 25 years of experience in foreign policy, diplomacy, and community development, including serving as New Zealand’s High Commissioner to South Africa.
“My vision for Tangata Moana is simply this: that they recognise the brilliance within them and harness this to succeed,” she says.
Dr Dunlop-Bennett has strong family ties to Te Herenga Waka. Her mother, Tagaloatele Professor Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop, was the inaugural director of Va’aomanu Pasifika, and several of her sisters, daughters, and niece are alumni or current students.
Provost Professor Bryony James says: “With Emma’s leadership we can build on the legacy of Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban and ensure Te Herenga Waka remains a welcoming and aspirational home for Pacific staff and students.”
