The Niuean community across the country has kicked off celebrations this week for Vagahau Niue. This year’s theme, “Leveki mo e Feaki e Vagahau Niue ma Anoiha,” is focused on the importance of preserving the Niue language for future generations.
Gerardine Clifford-Lidstone, Secretary of the Ministry for Pacific Peoples, highlights that language is vital for community identity: “Niue Language Week is a chance to honour and protect Vagahau Niue, ensuring it thrives among young people.”
The Vagahau Niue Trust and local groups, with support from the Ministry, have organised various events to celebrate the language.
This is an especially meaningful year for Niue as it marks 50 years of self-governance.
The Niuean community are working hard to strengthen language use, as many Niueans in New Zealand face challenges in maintaining their language connection, with only 12% currently speaking Vagahau Niue.
Gerardine invites all New Zealanders to engage with Vagahau Niue: “This is about supporting a vibrant culture, not just learning words.”
