A Fijian collective of artists with their bold harmonies and rich storytelling of Vatu Dei, will reach new audiences this October with the release of their debut album, launched as part of Fijian Language Week 2025 and their Pasifika Artist in Residence in Palmerston North.

Produced with The KaRs and Hokozoo Productions, the album celebrates iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) traditions while offering a fresh voice for the next generation. Blending meke (traditional song and dance), chants, harmonies, spoken word, and contemporary performance, Vatu Dei meaning “Steadfast Rock” share stories of legend, love, history, and everyday life.

The project is supported through the Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts Regional Residency in partnership with Palmerston North City Council, which invests in Pasifika artists strengthening culture, connection, and creativity.

“We are proud to support Vatu Dei as they take this next step,” says Stephanie Velvin of Palmerston North City Council. “They bring a fresh perspective and a strong connection to culture, which perfectly embodies this residency.”

Collective member Joe Bose adds: “We are not only reviving traditions, we’re reimagining what it means to be Fijian in the modern world, carrying the past forward with strength and pride.”

The debut album is available on all major streaming platforms from October 5th, 2025. https://music.drm.co.nz/vatu-dei or Promo Player – Vatu Dei
