Foreign Minister Winston Peters has reaffirmed New Zealand’s strong commitment to Pacific regionalism at the Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Fiji.
“New Zealand has been a long-standing advocate for Pacific unity, as a founding Forum member and host of the first Leaders’ Meeting in 1971,” Mr Peters said.
“In today’s uncertain strategic and economic environment, it’s vital the Pacific sets its own course, while also welcoming genuine partnerships that support our shared goals.”
Mr Peters welcomed a major report on Pacific regional architecture, calling it a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to strengthen regional institutions to better meet today’s challenges.
He also formally offered New Zealand as host for the 2027 Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting, the first time since 2011.
