Auckland’s contemporary Samoan restaurant Tala has been crowned the Supreme Winner of the Viva Top 50 Restaurants 2025, topping this year’s list under the leadership of head judge Jesse Mulligan.
“Choosing a Supreme Winner usually takes hours, but this year it took seconds,” says Mulligan. “Tala is enchanting—there’s nothing like it in the city or the world.”
Based in Parnell, Tala offers a unique fine-dining journey through Samoan culture. Executive Chef and Owner Henry Onesemo reimagines traditional village and street-food flavours with modern techniques, creating a playful, contemporary expression of Samoan cuisine.
Henry says the award is an honour, especially as Tala has only just turned two. “Auckland has so many incredible restaurants, so being named Supreme Winner is truly special. This recognition belongs to our amazing team, who deliver exceptional experiences every day.”
The win follows a string of achievements, including Henry becoming the first Samoan chef recognised at the Best Chef Awards in Milan and Tala earning Three Hats (19/20) from Cuisine, placing it among New Zealand’s top six restaurants.
