A charitable trust that operates the Walk Without Fear is urging Tongan Rugby to clarify the situation regarding Semisie Pomale, one of the attackers in the Liufau Vake manslaughter case.
It has been three years since the tragic death of Liafau (Fau) Vake in Auckland, where Semisie Pomale, was discharged without conviction last week for assaulting Fau in the group attack, which led to his death.
Pomale pleaded guilty to assault but received a discharge without conviction, claiming he had been appointed Deputy Team Manager for the Tonga Rugby national team.
His defence included an affidavit from head coach Tevita Tuʻifua, stating that travel restrictions on Pomale would harm team performance.
Eugene Bareman, Chairman of Walk Without Fear, expressed concern and demanded clarification from Tongan Rugby.
He noted that the acting Chief Executive, Aisea Aholelei, claimed Pomale is not employed by the Union, but this has not been confirmed in writing.
Bareman insists on the need for clarity, stating that if Pomale misled the courts, further legal action is necessary.
He criticised the discharge as unjust and called for significant reforms in the legal system to prevent similar situations.
The Walk Without Fear Trust aims to combat street violence in New Zealand by raising awareness, advocating for change, and promoting a culture of respect.
