Tongan PM Pohiva Tuionetoa confirmed Tonga’s first case of Covid-19 in this afternoon’s press conference. The positive case was a passenger on Wednesday’s repatriation flight from Christchurch to Tonga.
The person is in quarantine at the Tanoa Hotel on Nuku’alofa. The Covid test on the second day in Tonga confirmed the positive case.
A total of 215 passengers were on the flight from New Zealand to Tonga this week. Some were part of the Tongan Olympics team, who have been stuck in New Zealand since the country’s Delta lockdown. Every passenger tested negative before flying to Tonga.
PM Tuionetoa will announce on Monday if the country will go into lockdown.
