“The rivalry between Vaipuna and Satai goes beyond just football. It’s about community pride, tradition, and respect” Seanoa Junior Leiataua (Vaivase Tai U19 Coach).

A crowd of 120 plus gathered at the Tuana’imato Football fields in Samoa last night to witness a classic showdown between Vaivase Tai Football and Vaipuna Football.

The two clubs faced off for the Under 19 championship title, adding into another chapter of the spicy rivalry between the two sides.

Vaipuna managed to edge past Vaivase Tai in the end, securing a 4-2 win and the title.

Speaking to Tagata Pasifika after the match, Vaivase Tai U19 coach Seanoa Junior Leiataua spoke of the rivalry between the two clubs.

“The rivalry between Vaipuna and Satai goes beyond just football. It’s about community pride, tradition, and respect” he said.

“Both teams have strong histories and a lot of passion behind them, which makes every match a real battle. It’s not just about who wins; it’s about representing your people, your families, and your village with honour”

“Every game against Vaipuna teaches us something new about ourselves as players and as a team”

This year, that lesson for Seanoa and his team will be to rebuild and grow for next year after the loss.

“Football is about growth and learning from every experience, and today, we definitely took some important steps forward” Seanoa added

“There were moments where we showed real promise, and that’s something we’ll build on as we move forward”

“Next year, our goal is to not just compete, but to consistently challenge for the top spot. We’ve got the foundation, now it’s about pushing each other to be better every day”

The rivalry between the two clubs not only stretches in the Under 19 division, but also in the other competitive divisions.

It was only last week that Vaipuna defeated Vaivase Tai in the Open Men’s semi final.

It’s these rivalries and close battles that Seanoa believes is what makes the game of football grow and expand in Samoa.

“These rivalries create a sense of pride and passion, not just for the teams but for everyone who loves the game. The more competitive games we have, the more we inspire the next generation to follow their dreams and be a part of the sport” Seanoa said.

“Rivalries like this bring out the best in the players and the community. When teams go head-to-head in such intense matchups, it draws attention, sparks excitement, and encourages young players to get involved”
