This month marks the celebration of Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori (Māori language Week) Celebrations kicked off with a parade at the beginning of the week in Wellington.
Over the past five days, celebrations have included a series of events for people to learn not only about the language but the customs and traditions and the importance of language revitalisation.
What was born from a single Māori language day set up in 1972, that became a week-long event in 1974 and is now a permanent fixture of the country marking the 50 year milestone.
According to Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori ( Māori Language Commission) one million people have signed up on the same day at the same time to celebrate the Māori language movement. The commission has set a goal that by 2040 there will be more than a million people who can speak Te Reo Maori.
Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori, Ake, Ake, Ake, a forever language. The celebrations conclude this weekend.
