Public Interest Journalism funded through NZ On Air  Last Saturday marked the first ever Kiribati Open Day at the Auckland Maritime Museum. The Kiribati community gathered to celebrate their beloved culture and share stories of Te Taratai and the Kiribati arts. I-Kiribati artist and master weaver Louisa Humphry was there for the celebrations.

“Wherever you go, you know exactly who you are and where you come from.” – Leota Aotearoa Muaiava Sa’olele at her Saofai

In December 2022, Matai Titles were conferred on four women in the village of Falease’ela, Lefaga Samoa. The ceremony, known as a Saofai, was a unique experience for the women and their families who travelled to the islands from New Zealand and Australia for their investitures. This is their story.

“We’re used to it” – Faalogo Tana Umaga on Moana Pasifika’s struggles to find a new home

Moana Pasifika are no strangers to when it comes to hiccups in the start of the season. In 2022 – their maiden year – the newly established club went through four match postponements, resulting in them having to catch up with five games in 19 days.
