“Real Housewives” casts first Polynesian housewife

American network Bravo has cast the first Polynesian housewife in its hugely popular “Real Housewives” franchise.

The upcoming “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” series will star Jen Shah, of Tongan and Hawaiian heritage. In the trailer, we learn that she grew up Mormon in Salt Lake City, but has now converted to Islam.

Shah is clearly proud of her heritage, writing to her 10.3k Instagram followers, “Brown skin girl ?? Your skin just like pearls. The best thing in the world. Never trade you for anybody else…”

The Real Housewives is an American media franchise that consists of several reality television series broadcast on Bravo. The shows document the lives of several affluent housewives residing in varying regions throughout the United States and across the world.

In 2019 the New York Times posted an article criticising the segregation of race in the various “Real Housewives” iterations. The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City may be the franchise’s most diverse yet in America, representing a range of religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds.
