The Miss Samoa NZ pageant is returning for 2022 after a two year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The return of the pageant will see a new Miss Samoa crowned since 2019. Reigning Miss Samoa, Miss Samoa NZ and Miss Pacific Islands Fonoifafo McFarland-Seumanu is the first crowned Miss Samoa to ever hold the title for more than a year.

Director of Miss Samoa NZ Ulalemamae Te’evā Matāfai says they’re anticipating taking applications in the next two weeks.

“We would like to coincide with the Miss Samoa pageant in June, provided we have the time to prepare for our new Miss Samoa NZ and restrictions are lifted.”

In 2015, the Miss Samoa NZ pageant launched online and was deemed doable. This year’s pageant will follow a similar online arrangement, followed by a crowning ceremony to name a new Miss Samoa NZ 2022.

Matāfai says the return of the pageant will also celebrate their 31 years of service to the Samoan community, but their main priority is the safety of our eager teine Samoa who are keen to become next in line for the crown.

“The frustration of the continuous interruptions has affected our planning team. Pageants in general have been the least important on people’s minds especially during these times of uncertainty, but like everything, safety first for everyone.”
