Pope Francis, who was elected Pope in March 2013, died on Monday evening New Zealand time. He became the first Pope from outside Europe in 1200 years and the first Pope from the Southern Hemisphere.
Messages of condolences are being shared across the globe for Pope Francis who is being remembered as the Pope of Peripheries. His aim was peace for peace.
The Pacific Conference of Churches took to social media to pay tribute. We join our Catholic sisters and brothers of the Pasifika Household of God and the global Catholic Church in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Frances.
His ecumenical spirit and commitment to social and ecological justice and in particular, leadership grounded in compassion for the vulnerable, “the least” among us were an inspiration and will be a legacy for the Pasifika Household.
We call the Pasifika Household of God to pray for the soul of the late Pontiff, for a faith community in mourning and for those who will soon seek divine wisdom in electing Pope Francis’ successor as Bishop of Rome.
