It’s been two months since the Volcanic eruption devastated the Island of Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai.
Support came in the form of artists Benjamin Work & Elliot O’Donnell. Together they orchestrated a fundraising relief fund under the banner of Peau Kula (Red wave).
The Fundraiser for open purchases kicked off in early February and was a combined effort, rallying together contributions from local artists and other Pacific artists and organisations.
An estimated total of funds raised was approximately $35,660 (NZD) for those affected by the disaster.
Benjamin Work took to instagram to convey his gratitude and thank all those who contributed pieces of artwork and or participated in the purchase and fundraising of the event.
“A huge mālō ‘aupito to all the artists who sacrificially donated work towards Peau Kula, everyone who purchased a work, various media outlets and all of you who shared this fundraiser via your social media accounts.”
“We were overwhelmed by your response to support the people of Tonga affected by these tragic events, we will keep you updated as we work with friends on the ground Tanya Edwards and Serene Tay-Siasau,” says Work.
The funds have been distributed on the ground and have been overseen by Edwards and Tay-Siasau in the form of relief parcels.
