For nearly 30 years, Black Grace has been at the forefront of Pacific contemporary dance both nationally and internationally.

Founded by Artistic Director Neil Ieremia, Black Grace has become a beacon of cultural expression, blending artistry and tradition.

Now, Ieremia is passing on his knowledge and expertise to the next generation through a new initiative titled Company B.

Since 2002 the initiative has been a topic of discussion within the group and Company B has finally taken shape as a platform for young Pasifika, Maori and New Zealand dancers.

“I started Black Grace with the concept that in 100 years it would still be here providing a platform for young [people] to be able to create and present their stories at the highest level,” says Ieremia.

Emphasising the importance of training dancers to the highest calibre, Ieremia shared that the timing of something like this for emerging dancers, is fitting.

Over 40 people auditioned but only 12 were selected for the program.

And the chosen few soon discovered what it was like performing under the guidance of a world-class dance tutor, as 21 year old aspiring dancer David confessed.

“The fitness level has risen and the weight has lost itself which is awesome because I’ve been needing something to motivate me to shed off those pounds, get into shape and this has been perfect.”

After four weeks of intensive training, the efforts of Company B will culminate in a powerhouse performance called I Am a Renaissance that will be showcased at the Herald Theatre in Aotea Square.

Neil says the performance embodies the concept of rebirth and change, encouraging individuals to think beyond the confines of their surroundings and aspire to greater heights.

Through it all, Ieremia has high hopes for the initiative.

“I hope Company B continues and it becomes a bi-annual thing or an annual project where young people continually come in and try things and, then of course, I’d want some of the young people to come and work with Black Grace at some point.”

I Am a Renaissance will run from the 19th to the 23rd of July. You can secure your tickets at Ticketmaster or for more info visit blackgrace.co.nz
