Pasifika Police family creates a legacy as they celebrate multiple achievements

Leadership Award recipients past and present (L-R): Constables Savali Maelega Lilo, Atu-He-Vahanoa Halatoa and Maelega Lilo

This proud Pacific family has secured their legacy in law enforcement with another joining their ranks after receiving the Commissioner’s Award for Leadership.

Constable Atu-He-Vahanoa Halatoa, a member of Wing 368 expressed her pride for her Pacific heritage and community.

“I’ve always wanted to make a difference in our communities, especially in the Pasifika community, because I have a connection through my culture and upbringing. I am very proud to receive this award,” she says.

This achievement comes as no surprise considering the family’s tradition of service. Last month, Constable Maelega Lilo, (Atu’s husband), was honoured with the same award  graduating with Wing 367.

The torch of leadership was also carried by Atu’s brother-in-law, Constable Savali Maelega Lilo, who received the Leadership Award with Wing 350 in February 2022.

A testament to this family’s commitment to community service, Constable Rebecca Knowles, the partner of Savali Maelega Lilo, joined the ranks of police officers after her graduation from Wing 356 in August 2022.

This family’s dedication to law enforcement serves as an inspiration, fostering positive change within the Pasifika community and beyond.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Constable Atu-He-Vahanoa Halatoa emphasised the values that drive their collective commitment.

“Last year, my brother-in-law spoke about the powers to serve and protect our communities. Then last month, my husband talked about passion to serve.”

“Perseverance is essential to overcoming obstacles and improving not only our lives but also the lives of those around us, she says”

The graduation ceremony was attended by Police Commissioner Andrew Coster, Minister for Police Ginny Andersen and Chief Judge Christina Inglis.
