Labour announces $28.5m Pacific Education Innovation Fund in response to COVID-19

Associate Education Minister Jenny Salesa

Part of the Labour Government’s Pacific Education Action Plan 2020-2030 was rolled out this week.

The $28.5 million Pacific Education Innovation Fund will be spread out over four years.  The new funding will go towards educators, early learning services, schools, tertiary education providers and community groups.

“The purpose of the fund is to support comprehensive, innovative, collaborative, life-long practises across the education system so that our Pacific learners can continue to succeed during COVID-19,” said Associate Minister of Education Jenny Salesa.

In 2020 $3.5m will go towards supporting new and original wellbeing and curriculum initiatives in Pacific education, and $2.5m is available for innovative initiatives in Pacific bilingual and immersion education.

Applications are now open for the 2020 Innovation Fund and close on the 6th November 2020.

Those who are encouraged to apply are Pacific groups, representatives from education providers in early learning, schooling or the tertiary education sector, researchers, academics, providers and community organisation from across New Zealand.

The funding is part of the Government’s $80.2m investment in Pacific education through the Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund.
