Seven years after debuting in the Warriors’ inaugural NRLW squad, Apii Nicholls has been named captain for the club’s return to the women’s premiership in 2025 after a five-year absence.

The announcement came at Monday’s season launch. A foundation player and NRLW Warrior #2, Nicholls was head coach Ron Griffiths’ first signing and brings 28 games of top-level experience with the Warriors, Titans, and Raiders. She famously started at fullback in the Warriors’ first-ever NRLW game, a 10-4 upset over the Roosters in 2018.

Fittingly, the Warriors will face the reigning premiers, the Roosters, in their 2025 opener on July 6.

“Apii’s the only original Warrior returning, a testament to her loyalty and character,” said Griffiths. “She embodies what it means to be captain.”

Nicholls, 32, is a proud Ōtāhuhu junior, a 16-Test Kiwi Fern, World Cup standout, and 2023 Golden Boot finalist. She said the captaincy is an emotional honour and aims to lead by example, while also paying tribute to the pioneers of the women’s game.

“Playing for the Warriors is home for me,” she said when re-signing in 2024. “I’m excited to help grow and guide our local talent.”

The Warriors and Bulldogs join the expanded 12 team NRLW in 2025.
