Playing in Samoa for the first time after 15 years, Manusina defeated Australia A in front of their fans and families.
There were wonderful scenes yesterday at Apia Park as Manusina came away with a win at the death against Australia A.
The match was the first time Manusina had played back home in Samoa since 2009. The game was made possible through the Australian Government via Pacific Aus Sports partnering up with Lakapi Samoa and Rugby Australia.
Led by their captain Masuisuimatamaalii “Sua” Tauaua-Pauaraisa, Manusina showed from the kickoff that they meant business.
The scorching heat of the sun also played a big part in the intensity of the match, with both teams having to stop during the match for water breaks.
Both teams were locked at 12 all at half time with the second spell promising to be just as equally physical and demanding.
The visitor broke the deadlock by crossing over the line first in the second half extending their lead to 17-12
After multiple phases and close opportunities, Manusina finally levelled the scores yet again with a try in the corner. Narrowly missing the conversion, the scores were now yet again tied 17-17 with only a few minutes remaining of the match.
As the hooter sounded for the end of the match, Manusina were awarded a penalty 40 metres out, with flyhalf Cassie Siataga stepping up to the plate to kick the winning goal for her team.
With all hopes of Samoa on her shoulders, Siataga slotted the penalty over the posts with the ball grazing the crossbar to secure the 20-17 for Manusina.
“Thank you to Australia. It was a great game. The win was not easy. I want to thank all the Manusina players, their families and the coaches who believed in us,” captain Pauaraisa said..
“We take this victory and look forward to the next step in our journey.”
Manusinas next focus now lies ahead for the World XV3 tournament in Dubai where they will play for a qualification spot for the 2025 Womens Rugby World Cup.
