Raw, emotional and at times unexpectedly funny, Sons of Vao is a powerful new Pasifika drama about family, masculinity and breaking generational cycles.
Auckland Theatre Company presents the world premiere by Niuean playwright Vela Manusaute, co-directed with Anapela Polata’ivao. The season runs 18 June to 5 July at ASB Waterfront Theatre.
Spanning four decades, the play follows three brothers from Niue to Ponsonby, shaped by the shadow of their father Vao – a charismatic but violent man. As they grow into adulthood, they must decide whether to continue or break the cycle they were raised in.
The Adam NZ Play Award-winning script draws from Manusaute’s lived experience and marks the first Niuean story staged by Auckland Theatre Company.
The cast includes Beulah Koale, alongside Haanz Fa’avae-Jackson, Epine Bob Savea and Brett Taefu.
Accessible performances include $20 Relaxed, NZSL-interpreted and Audio Described shows, plus $30 tickets for under-30s and a “Pay What You Wish” option.
Advisory: Contains strong language and themes of family violence.
