Construction of the new Fale Malae centre wants you to have your say

Fale Malae at Frank Kitts Park is being proposed for Wellington’s waterfront as a national cultural landmark.

The Fale (building) Malae (green space) would form part of the public open space within the park. The proposal was made by the Fale Malae Trust, a non-profit entity.

The Fale Malae trust said “The proposed Fale will be a national, cultural institution that will substantially enhance the amenity value and public enjoyment of Wellington’s waterfront.”

“It will be a stunning, contemporary building that celebrates both New Zealand’s place in the Pacific and the role of Pacific people in New Zealand’s national identity.” They added.

The structure will support a wide range of community and educational activities. The pavilion within the park will include a café and storage facilities to support recreational waterfront activities such as dragon boat racing.

Before the project can proceed the Council needs to understand the community’s views on the waterfront proposal to inform their decision.

The Fale Malae project will not be funded by the Council however funding will be required for the demolition, park redevelopment, landowner approval and resource consent.

The Fale Malae Trust are encouraging all people who love the Pacific to complete the survey below. Have your say on the proposal by 5pm Monday 10 April

Councillors will then make their decision based on your feedback by June 2023.

Mayor Tory Whanau stands behind the new waterfront developments. “The plans for the Fale Malae are elegant and show design excellence which is exactly what we want to see.

The Wellington region is a rich and diverse cultural environment, and we want our creative capital to reflect those communities, especially celebrating Aotearoa’s Pasifika heritage.

The Trust is supported by the Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Mana Whenua and the Pasifika community.
