It’s been a tough past week with the Fijian rugby community, following the sudden death of Olympic gold medalist Josaia Raisuqe last week. Raisuqe was reportedly on his way to training when his vehicle was hit by a train.
Raisuque was known as a formidable part of French club Castres Olympique.
In a statement, the club said,“Castres Olympique is in mourning.”
“It is with heavy hearts that we learned of the death this morning of our player Josaia Raisuqe in a road accident.
“The entire CO family is devastated by this terrible news. Josh had been a member of the club since 2021. He was a wonderful teammate, much loved by everyone, including the Castres supporters who had embraced him. We extend our sincere condolences and thoughts to his family and loved ones.”
Tributes have flown in from former teammates and coaches of Raisuqe including former Fiji sevens coach Ben Ryan.
Ryan was the first to notice the 30 year olds rugby brilliance, selecting him in the 2015 sevens side for Hong Kong. That same side would go on to win the tournament with Raisuqe impressing in his debut.
“I picked him for his Fiji 7s debut in 2015 after shining for Tokatoka Westfield” Ryan said.
“Hong Kong was his first tournament and he shone in a side that picked up the title. Full of energy full of laughter”
Back home in Fiji, Raisuqe’s family and parents also mourn his loss.
Speaking to local media from their family home in Lutu Wainibuka, parents Tevita and Mereani Raisuqe described how they are absolutely shattered about their son’s passing.
“The last time we spoke was Wednesday night (night before the accident),” Mr Raisuqe recalled.
“I saw him online and called. We talked for nearly three hours. He was happy, relaxed. I didn’t know it would be the last time I’d hear his voice.”
He paused.
“I am so shattered. My son is gone. Just like that.”
