WellSouth introduces new Pasifika and Māori scholarship for medical students

The primary health organisation for Southland and Otago has launched the annual WellSouth Primary Care General Practice Award for 2023. In partnership with the University of Otago the award honours the top-achieving Pasifika and Māori training interns in general practice. 

The scholarships are awarded to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Māori and Pasifika training interns who are based in Dunedin and graduating this year. 

Eugene Kado took out the top Pacific training intern in General Practice and Chekodi Fearnley-Fitzgerald won the top Māori training intern in General Practice. 

WellSouth CEO Andrew Swanson-Dobbs says, “we are proud to support and encourage a growing workforce that is representative of our many diverse communities and who will bring their cultural perspective and experience to the primary health care sector.”

The Associate Dean Pacific, Dunedin School of Medicine Letava Tafuna’i was also in attendance at the special graduation ceremony held last week at the Scenic Circle Southern Cross.
