
The 267th Pope who will lead the Catholic Church of more than 1.4 billion Catholics across the globe, has been chosen.
The newly elected, Chicago-born pontiff who holds dual citizenship from the USA and Peru, Pope Leo XIV, delivered his first speech witnessed by thousands in the Vatican city.
Robert Prevost, will be known as Pope Leo XIV. Addressing the cheering crowd in Italian, the 69-year-old says, “Peace be with all of you.
“Brothers and sisters dearest, this is the first greeting of Christ resurrected. I would like to offer a greeting of peace to reach your families, all of you, wherever you are. May peace be with you.”
“God loves us all, unconditionally”.
During his first address he paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, who passed away at age 88 on Easter Monday.
Cardinal Sir John Ribat from Papua New Guinea and Cardinal Soane Patita Paini Mafi from Tonga were among the 133 Cardinals who took part in the Conclave to choose the new Pope.
