Free bi-lingual reading apps in Tongan and English, Tau Laukonga, is now available for download on Android and iPhone.
The app was developed by Peace Corps Volunteer Andrew Pavey with support from Friends of Tonga, the Tonga Ministry of Education, and the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga.
It offers over 100 fun, culturally relevant books in various genres and difficulty levels. Most books also include audio narration by native speakers.
According to a 2017 World Bank report. In Tonga, about 70% of households lack children’s reading materials. Tau Laukonga provides a free digital library, accessible without internet, helping preserve the Tongan language and improve English literacy.

“This initiative is a key milestone in children’s development in the digital age,” says Tonga’s Crown Princess Sinaitakala.
“This project highlights the power of international cooperation in supporting literacy and youth development,” says Peace Corps Tonga Director Elizabeth Neason.
Michael P. Hassett, President of Friends of Tonga, adds, “Tau Laukonga could transform literacy for an entire nation.”
Andrew Pavey, believes the app offers a better educational alternative to social media games for Tongan children.
More books and features will be added later this year, and authors interested in donating children’s books in Tongan can contact [email protected].
