The Papua New Guinea Chiefs have confirmed Samoan international rugby league star Jarome Luai has agreed to join the club ahead of its entry into the National Rugby League competition.
Luai will remain with the Wests Tigers until the end of the 2027 NRL season before officially linking with the Chiefs for their inaugural campaign in 2028.
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape welcomed the development, stating the move reflects the growing strength and ambition of rugby league in Papua New Guinea and the wider Pacific region. He said Luai’s involvement represents a significant moment for the game in the country and will inspire future generations of Papua New Guinean players.
Chiefs representatives have described Luai as a marquee signing and a foundational piece in building the club’s identity, leadership, and on-field direction as preparations continue for entry into the NRL.
Luai, a premiership-winning playmaker at NRL level, is expected to play a central role in the club’s long-term strategy as it builds toward its debut season.
Further announcements regarding the Chiefs’ inaugural squad and operations structure will be made in due course.
