“We’ve been to the last two finals, we haven’t come up with what we worked hard for. We addressed at the start of the week and that’s what happened, but there is an excitement of being able to be here again and have another opportunity” – Samisoni Taukei’aho.
As the Chiefs prepare to travel down to Christchurch to face the Crusaders for the Super Rugby Pacific final, they have had to address the big chip on their shoulder.
Saturday’s match marked the third finals appearance in a row for the side, failing to clinch the win losing to the Crusaders in 2023 and to the Blues last year.
As the Chiefs look to rewrite the script and hopefully walk away with the win, it did not come without a few reality checks for the side at the start of this week.
Hooker and leader of the side Samisoni Taukeiaho said the team addressed the losses, determined to learn from it.
“Obviously we’re going to address it, there is no hiding from it. We’ve been to the last two finals, we haven’t come up with what we worked hard for” Samisoni said
“We addressed at the start of the week and that’s what happened, but there is an excitement of being able to be here again and have another opportunity”
Another key part of their preparations was constantly instilling in their forward pack to win the physical battle upfront. It’s a trait that Samisoni said has been with the Chiefs DNA since the very start.
“Rugby is a contact sport and we believe that if we win the physicality battle it takes you to the way of winning the game. For us, it’s one thing that doesn’t require talent, it’s attitude and trust in your teammate and putting your body on the line” he said
“It’s about winning those moments as well, and yesterday there was a bit of clarity and today just installing our game plan . And just making sure that when they are under pressure we can execute what we have been preparing.”
The Chiefs head into the finals with some good news, following the re-signing of versatile and physical forward, Naito Ah Kuoi.
The 24-year-old lock, who debuted for the Chiefs in 2020, has become a fan favourite for his powerful on-field performances and infectious energy off it. Known for his fearless playing style and genuine connection with supporters, Ah Kuoi’s recommitment is a major win for the club.
Gallagher Chiefs Head Coach Clayton McMillan says Ah Kuoi embodies what it means to be a Chief on and off the field.
“Naitoa is a fearless and dynamic player, who consistently brings an energy that lifts everyone around him. Off the field, he’s great at connecting with fans, building team culture, and proudly representing his heritage and community.”
