Tokelau youth from across the country gathered in Auckland last month for the Battle of the Regions Kilikiti Tournament.

Hosted by the Mafutaga Tupulaga Tokelau i Aukilani, the event brought together teams from Auckland, Porirua, and Rotorua at Mangere War Memorial Park, with over 200 people in attendance to celebrate Tokelau’s national sport and foster cultural unity.

The tournament was a demonstration of the Tokelauan community’s commitment to preserving our cultural heritage while also encouraging the next generation to connect, compete, and celebrate. It also marks an important moment in the lead-up to the Tokelau Easter Festival 2026, which will be hosted in Auckland, promising an even larger celebration of Tokelau culture.

Treasurer for Young Tokelau People of New Zealand Nova Tagi wrote:

“Events like the Battle of the Regions are more than just about sports, they’re about building stronger communities and ensuring that the younger generation understands and appreciates the rich culture of Tokelau. These gatherings create opportunities for young people to connect, make memories, and pass down traditions that have been celebrated for generations.”

With the Tokelau Easter Festival just around the corner, Nova says the excitement is already building.
