Smaller island villages disappointed at Auckland Council’s new plan for Pasifika Festival 2021

A change in the programme for Pasifika Festival 2021 has left a lot of the smaller island villages feeling “frustrated”.

ATEED (Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development), the branch of Auckland Council that oversees the event, have announced that the number of villages will be reduced for next year’s event from 11 villages down to seven. This means Tuvalu, Tokelau, Kiribati, Tahiti, Solomon Islands and Hawai’i villages will no longer have their own stage but be grouped into one.

Tuvalu village coordinator Molia Alama Tulafono has spoken up about this.

Pacific language hub receives funding boost to go digital

The Pacific Education Centre (PEC) launched their new premises in Manukau and received a $3.9 million funding boost over four years from the Government to continue providing free Pacific language classes in Aotearoa.

PEC is New Zealand’s oldest not-for-profit, Pacific community-based education provider. It was established more than 40 years ago as an organisation to support Pacific peoples new to Aotearoa New Zealand to learn English.
